Your Hip-pocket Guide to Great Hiking

The Lake Tahoe Basin provides some of the best hiking to be found anywhere. Most Tahoe hiking books concentrate on the lake’s west and south shores. But across the Lake from the towering peaks of Desolation Wilderness lies another Tahoe, an area where the interesting history has left most of it undeveloped and available for us to enjoy today.
In East Tahoe Trails, author John McCall describes 29 of his favorite hikes and walks in Nevada’s Carson Range. These range from leisurely “Lakeside Rambles” to a challenging three-day backpacking trip. Each hike description contains a detailed topographic route map and most have one or more color photos. Each section of the book also contains detailed descriptions and maps of the trailheads, many of which are convenient to the Stateline vacation areas.
A chapter details the contribution of the area to the rich history of the Comstock era of Virginia City silver mining and tells which hikes explore the historical events. In the hike descriptions, the history and locations are detailed.
McCall lives on Tahoe’s east shore and has hiked these trails for years. Over the past 20 years, he and his wife have also help build the Tahoe Rim Trail. This trail runs the full length of the area in the book and many of the hikes use the Trail for part of the route. The author has hiked many of the world’s great trails and believes that the East Tahoe Trails are as scenic, enjoyable and spectacular as any in the world.
